A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a document that is one of the most important parts of your application when applying for graduate school. It tells the admission advisory board about your identity, personality, the reason why you’re applying, why you’re a decent promiser, and what you need to do next. The write-up piece is often called an SOP letter, personal background, application essay, cover letter, objectives for graduate study, or something similar to one of these.
